If you are contemplating changing the catalytic converter, and the
vehicle has more than 80,000 miles on the odometer.
CHANGE THE OXYGEN SENSORS...ALL OF THEM!
Oxygen Sensors are usually the problem that takes the converter out. By changing the converter and leaving old, worn O2 sensors, you risk damaging the new converter. If this occurs, it will not be covered under warranty!
O2 Sensors are located in front and at the rear of the converter. They communicate with each other and then send information to the ECM (computer) on the vehicle. This determines whether the ECM leans out or enriches the air/fuel ratio mixture going to the engine. Bad information from the O2 sensors will destroy the substrate of the converter. It will burn off the washcoat of precious metals on the substrate inside the converter, and the converter will fail, casusing a PO420/PO430 check engine code.
